M-I-Crooked Letter-Crooked Letter-I-Crooked Letter-Crooked Letter-I-Humpback-Humpback-I

CROOKED LETTER, CROOKED LETTER BY Tom Franklin is the latest book that I’ve been recommending to everyone.  The title is from the verse that children learned to remember how to spell Mississippi.  It is a southern mystery where the mystery is secondary to the real story of two men, one black and one white, who find their long friendship complicated by secrets and misunderstanding.  The book addresses bullying, racism, domestic violence and loyalty between childhood friends. It’s the best crime novel I’ve read since MYSTIC RIVER.

Remember that those who got rich in the gold rush weren’t panning for gold; they were selling pick-axes.
Sotheby’s Does the Right Thing
Sotheby’s has cancelled the planned auction of a 16th century ivory mask from West Africa after online protesters and the Nigerian government complained that the precious artifact had been looted from the country by British troops, reports The Independent.  The mask, which has been exhibited only two times in 1947 and again in 1951, was taken by British forces in 1897.  It ended up in the hands of Lieutenant Colonel Sir Henry Galway, and was due to be sold by his decendants for as much as $7 million.

Artwork printed onto acrylic and mounted with stainless steel spacers so it “floats” on the wall.  Great solution for rooms with humidity and moisture, which would make artwork inside a frame warp and wrinkle.

Junot Diaz is the man, man.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.  What an amazing book.  A hilarious, harrowing, heartwarming account of the character Oscar de Leon (nicknamed Oscar Wao because of his resemblance to Oscar Wilde) and his Dominican family.  I knew nothing about the Dominican Republic before reading the book, or the horror that was the Truillo regime.  I loved the vulgarity.  I loved the nerdy sci-fi references that I got.  I loved the nerdy superhero references that I didn’t get.  This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read—a shining example of what the modern novel should be.

Dutch Tree Windmills

An awesome design for tree-like windmills in the Netherlands.  Leave it to the Dutch to create such a clever, beautiful, eco-friendly idea for power generation.

Commissioned by the Dutch government to develop a less intrusive windmill for the flat Dutch landscape, this proposed windmill uses an organic branching design that can hold up to 8 turbines and grow as tall as 120 meters.
